According to Lt. Gen. Võ Văn Tuấn, Deputy Chief of General Staff, the helicopter is a Mil Mi-171 (no. 01) from the 916th Helicopter Aviation Regiment (371st Division). Technical factors are the cause of this crash.
It is now confirmed that 16 people was killed in the crash. Five others are in serious injuries (mainly from burns) and are hospitalized in the National Institute of Burns.
After detecting problems, the crew has tried to steer the helicopter away from civilian areas. There is no casualties on the ground
